Elf for Health and Weekend Recap

I signed up for Elf for Health a little late in the game so I started this ridiculously fun and motivating challenge in week 3. We are now in week 4 of the challenge. During my first week of participating I ate lots of veggies, scheduled work outs with a buddy, paid it forward, donated to a charity, and made sure I had lots of water. Loved the different daily challenges and have really enjoyed getting to know my Elf. This coming up week we are making healthy cookies (do they exist?), sneaking veggies into our favorite casseroles, sharing our favorite circuit workout with our elf and treating ourselves to a treat we have been craving. It isn't to late to sign up for Round 3 of Elf for Health. Click here for more info.

Over the weekend I was scheduled to run with a fellow MRTT member. She has been cancer free for one year and wanted to celebrate with a 13.1 run. I volunteered to run with her for part of it. I decided I would do 5 miles with her since my Elf (see above) was running a 5 mile race the same day. All the other people who were going to run with her had to cancel at the last minute so I was going to try to go as far as I could with her.

Mile 1 went great. We started with a nice warm up walk since we thought we would be running for the next many miles.

Mile 2 went a little different. Due to knee problems that have been bugging her for some time we ended up walking on and off.

Mile 3 we attempted to run and walk when we needed to.

Mile 4-8 running was just hurting her knee too bad so we did a fast pace walk to finish off the day. I loved the company but was a little bummed that I couldn't get the long run in that I had been wanting to do. Running with friends makes running multiple miles more fun.

I need to find someone in the area who is willing to run with me 4 or more miles to help keep me accountable and help push myself to great distance than the easy 3 miles around my house.

How do you push yourself to get out of just doing the normal amount of miles?

12/12/12 and other upcoming runs

Today is 12/12/12 How are you going to celebrate it? Run 12 miles,12k or 1.2 miles at 12:12?
I stole this nice graphic from Run with Jess

My husband was suppose to do a 12k but ended up doing nearly 10 miles. He did it on the 11th and finished after midnight so he counts it as 12/12/12. A little tidbit about my husband is that he loves to walk and hike. He walks between 5-8 miles every night. I say night because he is also an awesome dad and tucks the kids in to sleep and then heads out for his "me" time. Super proud of him :D Ok back to my running stuff! Hoping to run at least 1.2 miles today. I would love to do more but I have work today, kids to watch while my husband works and my husband has a meeting tonight so hopefully I get a fun. Don't worry if I don't get time to run then I will do 12 extra pushups or squats in honor of 12/12/12.

Another exciting run that I am really looking forward to is on Saturday. A woman in my MRTT running group is celebrating her one year cancer free anniversary! She is going to run 13.1 and wants friends to join her. We were suppose to celebrate last weekend but the weather turned on us and we rescheduled. I come from a long line of awesome women who have fought cancer, some more than once. My beautiful Mother has been cancer free for almost four years! I am happy to support any victory over cancer.

Do you feel passionate about a cause? What fun runs do you have planned?

Weekend Runs

Yesterday during my lunch break at work I took advantage of my awesome work location and ran on the greenbelt. I have only run on the greenbelt once before so I didn't want to detour to much and get lost. I didn't want to be late getting back to work so just did an easy 3 miles. I now know I have time for a lot more.

Today I had a meeting with my Mom's RUN this Town chapter. We had a great meeting and planned some great runs such as one to work on hills, our chapter 10k, and a 13.1 run to celebrate a fellow members one year being cancer free! I can't wait for the next few runs! Oh and I won free athletic bottoms from Old Navy! We did an easy 2.6 mile run then I ran half way home. A total of 4 miles! I still have lots of training to do before my 10k but I am excited about the challenge!

How did you workout this weekend?

Happy December!!!

I am loving December!!! Sure it has only been three days but so far awesome! I am doing great on my squat-a-thon, 25 days of running, and my planking streak is going strong. It helps that the Frosty Fitness Challenge this week is 200 squats (over the course of the week) so the squat-a-thon challenge totally works for both (yay multitasking).

I am on day 5 of my plank a day, I started out with 1:02 and wanted to get to 2 minutes by Christmas. Well today I was able to do 1:45!!!! Awesome in my mind and I am going to kill my goal!

I ran three days in a row. Being a busy working mom, it has been hard to find time to get my runs in. Three days in a row is a huge victory for me! I think I will try for 12 days if not the whole 25 days of running.

I am growing tired of most of the songs on my workout playlists. Does anyone have any good suggestions on new music?

Frosty Challenges and Group Runs

This week for the Frosty Fitness Challenge we were challenged to do 100 push ups over the course of the week. I have been slacking on my push ups for the last three weeks so this was exactly what I needed to help motivate me. I have done 100 push ups every single day this week except Tuesday. I have one day left in the challenge but I have already done 600 push ups this week!!!!! I can't wait to see what the challenge is next week!

Since it is December, I will be starting a few other challenges starting today. One is an instagram challenge that will help everyone get in the holiday spirit with a #HolidayADay challenge. For more information on the instagram or twitter photo challenge click here. I also plan to take part in the Squat-A-Thon for December. For more information on the Squat-A-Thon click here. I will also be challenging myself in doing a plank every day. I have been doing it for four days and have already improved my time by 30 seconds! It pays to plank every day.

This morning I went on a nice run with my wonderful Mom's Run This Town chapter. We did an easy 4 miles and got to enjoy the company of each other. We ran on the beautiful Greenbelt system. It was awesome running with a group outside of a race setting so we could just enjoy the scenery and go at a very easy pace. I can't wait for my next group run!!!!

Are you doing any fun challenges? Do you prefer to run in a group or solo?

Turkey Day 5k

I started Thanksgiving by running a 5k with one of my best friends! We both started running around the same time but the only time we seem to actually be able to get together for a run is during a 5k (hopefully a 10k in January). This was our third race together and we rocked it!!! We both had our best time ever for a 5k and we helped push each other through the cold and the early morning time.

The first mile I could not feel my face or my hands. Finally after 1.5 miles I started to warm up. It was great to know that I still had hands, I wasn't sure they would make it through the morning. During the race, I picked a lady out of the crowd that I wouldn't let get out of my sight. She ran slightly faster than the pace I would have chosen to run on my own. Around mile 2, she stopped running and began walking. I started to get sad that she wasn't going to help push me for the rest of the race. I almost yelled encouraging words at her as we ran by her but there were so many people starting to walk that singling her out might of made me look like a creeper.  The last half mile we were running directly at the sun, I really wish I would have brought sunglasses. All you could see was a bright light and what looked like hundreds of smokers since the air was so cold. Finally we saw the end and I was able to sprint to the end. Note to readers: my sprint is probably as fast as other people's normal pace. We felt great at the end of the race.

Our next race will probably be The Hot Chocolate Run the end of December. Then in January we are doing our first 10k together. My BFF has done four half marathons but she has never done a 10k so I am excited that we will both get to do our first 10k's together!
How do you and your BFF stay fit together?

Sweat Pink!!!

I recently discovered I was accepted as a Sweat Pink Ambassador!!!! Today I received my beautiful pink shoelaces! I immediately put the new laces in my shoes and couldn't wait to try them out so I went for a nice two mile walk with my kids and husband. I can't wait to see if pink shoelaces actually make you run faster, like I have heard. I plan to run all over town with my shoelaces and hopefully try out some new ways to sweat pink.  I love the color pink and actually I discovered Sweat Pink by looking for pink shoelaces for breast cancer awareness month in October. Now I have my own pink shoelaces and am very proud to wear them as a Sweat Pink Ambassador. My pink shoelaces will be making an appearance at the Turkey Day 5k bright and early on Thursday morning. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!! Look for a giveaway coming in the next week, might even include a pair of pink laces :D

How are you celebrating Thanksgiving? Does it include any healthy choices?

Being Prepared

Normally I like to run in the mornings but since I started working earlier and the days are getting shorter, I try to get my runs in when I can. I get cold all the time! I was wearing four layers on top and two on bottom, two hats (not evening joking) and two very mismatched socks and I decided that it was a perfect time to go on a run. The first mile I was still freezing even with all the layers. I started to heat up. Finally I decided I had to lose some layers. Picture this, a woman running as she is trying to take off sweats without stopping completely and without taking off her shoes. I must have looked hilarious!! For the rest of my run I looked almost like a legit runner except for my super awesome, very loud, mismatched socks! It started snowing so I ended the run early but it was enjoyable! I still have 9 more miles to go until I complete my goal for the Frosty Fitness Challenge but with it being cold I will be lucky if I complete it this week. If I would have planned my outfit better and worn my running clothes instead of just what clothes that I thought were warm then I wouldn't have been stripping in the middle of the run so be prepared! With that being said I really need to go shopping for cold weather running clothes. Any suggestions or brands that keep you warm on your cold runs?

Oh Interval training...

I have a love/hate relationship with interval training. While I haven't been doing it all that long, I am already noticing an improvement in my time. Which is awesome!!! I am not the slowest runner in the world but I am no where near calling myself fast. I love interval training for helping improve my time and my running overall but man sometimes it is just hard! Maybe interval training is easy for some people but I find it some what challenging and that also makes the feeling after a run feel so much better. I am signing up for the MRTT Virtual 10k in January. I know that I will be ready for a 10k for sure by then. I also plan to do an actual 10k in March and hopefully my pace will be good enough to qualify me for a decent corral for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon in January 2014. I am hoping to get a run in tomorrow morning. This week I am taking part of a 5 week challenge called Frosty Fitness Challenge. For the first week, you need to run as close to a 20k (12.4 miles) as possible. Sounds like a fun challenge and I will do my best to make sure I get the miles in! Can't wait!!

Finally getting back on track

Working two jobs is hard! I thought that once my seasonal job finished last week then I would have tons of free time to run, well so far that doesn't feel like that is true. I finally got a decent run in (first one all week) and looking forward to getting two more in this week. Today was perfect for a run, weather was awesome and my ipod was charged. However I only listened to three songs on repeat. I wonder how awesome I look singing AND dancing as I am running by traffic.

Saturday is my group run with MRTT. I can't wait!!! I love running with people and unfortunately I rarely get to do it since I have to drive 30 minutes to meet up with any of my running friends. YAY for running with friends (that sounds like a fun app)!

Do you prefer to run with friends or a lone?

Nice little Saturday Run

While working two jobs it has been hard to find the time to get a run in. Since one of my jobs was seasonal and ended Saturday I am looking forward to having some more "me" time. Unfortunately I only ran once this past week. Next week I will be able to find more time especially with the daylight savings time change. I can't wait to see the sun at an earlier time. The run I was able to go on this past week I choose to do with my daughter. We only did two miles but I couldn't be more proud of that little girl. She wasn't feeling great due to a cough and even fell pretty hard at the beginning of our run. My tough girl said she did not want to quit and wanted to keep moving. She is an inspiration and one of the reasons I run!

My husband and I are participating in Pile On The Miles. I will be trying to run 40 miles in November. Super easy for some people but it will be a good challenge for me. My husband is a rock star and is going to try and walk around 200 miles in November. He is a walker and does a crazy amount of miles every night so I think he will be able to do it!

The Color Run

Last January while browsing on Pinterest I discovered The Color Run. It looked amazing!!!! I told my husband that I wanted to run it. Last January I couldn't even run 5 minutes so I looked up a good Couch-to-5k program. I started the beginning of February. The Color Run got rescheduled three times and I was worried it wasn't going to actually come. Finally the big day was here!! I trained for many months and was dressed in white and ready to get colorful! I ran with a member of my new running group and I knew my husband, kids and Mother-in-law would be waiting at the finish line for me. This wasn't my first 5k but it was the reason I started running so I feel like it was a very important race. They have a different color every kilometer or so. The first one we reached was pink. my running buddy and myself didn't get very colorful :( so we made a goal of getting more saturated at the rest of the color stations. The next station was yellow, we all looked like bananas! It was awesome. Then came orange! I must have paid extra attention to orange considering my hands were stained orange. The last color station was blue! For some reason most of the runners thought that the race was over way before you actually reached the finish line. I had to dodge people standing around taking photos. We made it to the end and I was all smiles! I did it!! I ran the Color Run without stopping. I poured blue powder (each racer was given a packet of color) on my kids after the race. We still have blue in our hair after a few washes. It was the happiest 5k I have ever done and so excited that I was able to be apart of it. I felt so good after the race was over that I decided that I have to run a 10k soon. I need to get back to my training and continue improving!  A year ago I couldn't run, now I am running a 5k with my running group! Life is pretty awesome!

No exciting title

On Sunday I went on a run with my four year old daughter. She loves to go on runs. I love pretending like I know what I am talking about and teaching her the proper way to breath and also how to pace herself so she doesn't get burnt out from going too fast. She did 2 MILES!!! I am so proud of her. I hope that we are teaching her how to enjoy exercise and that she will continue to love running. Growing up I  didn't exercise with the family regularly so I really want to ingrain activity in my kids.

Today I did a scheduled run from my 5k-to-10k app. I was suppose to run 40 minutes. To be completely honest I wasn't sure I was going to be able to do it. I didn't want to go on a run today and almost just did a 20 minute because it is easier. Well I ended up doing the full 40 minutes and feeling great. Truth is, I struggle with motivation and I will be doing great but then I get stuck at only doing 2 miles or 3 miles for a few weeks. I have trouble sometimes motivating myself to go past my comfort zone. That is one reason training apps really work for me. I don't have to motivate myself to run 4 miles, I just turn on my app and stop when it tells me.

Saturday is my first meeting with my new running group!!!! We will have a meeting then a short group run afterwards. I call a short run 2 miles but I wonder what they consider to be a short run. One of the girls just ran a marathon and the another 10k and there is another training for a half marathon. Let's hope this "short" run is actually some what short!!

Back to training and new running group!

Now that race week is behind me, I can focus on getting back to my 10k training. My goal is to run 6.2 miles by Thanksgiving. Some people would just push through and run 6 miles tomorrow. Well I am not those people! I like to slowly increase my mileage and as a mother of two sometimes I can't always get out 3 times a week for a run. I am trying to set a realistic goal that I can actually achieve rather than setting myself up for failure.

I recently discovered Moms RUN This Town. It sounds awesome!!! Upon checking out this local chapter I found out some women are training for their first 5k and some just did their first marathon. I am hoping that with such a wide variety of experience that I will be able to fit in some where. The group seems very supportive and I can't wait for my first meeting (assuming I don't have to work during it).

Another 5k under my belt

Today was my second 5k. It was a little tougher than the one earlier this week but it was still really fun. I ran it with two of my friends. I love combining running with hanging out with my friends. I have another 5k in one month. This one is on flat ground and I will use the next month to get more training under my belt. The next one is The Color Run, I can't wait to frolic in tons of color. After that race I am not sure when my next one will be. I love getting deals on races so I guess I will just have to keep my eyes open and see if any appeal to me :D I am so thankful for my husband who will watch and wrangle  our kids while I am off doing all these races!!!!

First 5k...DONE!!!!

I was incredibly nervous about my first 5k. I have been training for this moment since February but it was still nerve racking. I was terrified it was going to be super small race and I was going to choke and come in last place. Thankfully the race went way better than I expected. My friend and I were passing people left and right. It was very exciting passing people. I have never ran with anyone else before so doing it in a race setting was also nerve racking. I have another 5k this Sunday which I am very excited about. Then another at the end of October. I am proud of myself for challenging myself and learning to run and enjoy it. I can't wait to continue my training for a 10k and after that my half marathon is Disneyland! I decided I want my very first half marathon to be in Disneyland so I have over a year to train for that. I am thrilled to continue gaining distance and improving my time. Also found out a friend who has been running for a few years wants to do the half marathon with me. I have a group of eight that are talking about doing the half marathon in Disneyland. Out of those eight only three currently run regularly. I really hope that the whole eight will run and that hopefully this will encourage exercise in people that currently don't do that much. YAY running!!!

One Week!

In one week I will be running my first 5k. Yeah I am a total slacker and have been running for over 6 months and just now running my first 5k. I think the race won't have very many participants but even if I am in last place I won't care. As long as I can run the whole thing that will make me happy. So next Wednesday I run a 5k then a few days later I will run another 5k. Then a month later I will run another 5k! Three 5k's in a month should make up for my lack of races the last 6 months. I had a great run this morning and feel really proud of all that I have been able to do. Some people can't run a mile but I can run more than three miles! I feel pretty awesome!

Another Evening Run

Yesterday while my awesome husband was making dinner I went for a short run. It was only my second evening run ever but this one felt better than the first. I have two weeks exactly until my 5k so I need to keep up the evening runs so I won't die in the heat or the awkward running time for me. Tomorrow I plan to run in the morning (yay morning). I have to make sure I feel comfortable with the distance. After reviewing my running habits the last few weeks I discovered that I am slacking! The last few weeks I only get two runs in a week and sometimes only one. No wonder I haven't done well with adding additional miles on each run. I am trying to focus on making sure the 5k will be comfortable then I will start adding lots of miles. I have another 5k at the end of October but that one isn't timed and all about fun. So while I will still be running and trying to increase my milage that one doesn't seem stressful. It is amazing how actually signing up for a race will keep you motivated and actually get you out the door to train.

Running with people

I am use to running in the middle of nowhere. I have only seen another person running once in the last 6 months when I am actually out there running. I see a few bikers, maybe two or three but not every time I run. Sometimes I run and I go a few miles without even seeing a car. You get it, it is the middle of nowhere!! Yesterday my family and I went for an adventure. My husband went on a hike with our two kids while I ran around the lake and circled back and found them again. It was a little after noon and I prefer to run in the early morning. The heat sucked and also I found it strange running while lots of bikers were passing me and people were every where! I really do not enjoy running in the evenings but considering I have a 5k coming up in 16 days (Ahhh) in the evening then I need to get ready for it. I plan to go on an evening running tomorrow night and hopefully I will feel better about the upcoming 5k. Oh in other news, after tonights walk with my family I should make it to another city on my journey of "running to Disney". Hooray!!

New App

I work very well with apps. I have an easier time following someone else's plan than trying to plan my own. I recently downloaded a 5k-to-10k app. Why this app when my ultimate goal is a half marathon? I get overwhelmed by the high miles so starting with a small goal of 10k is first priority. I am on day 2 of the first week of the nine week program. I am so excited about this and after taking two weeks off of running I finally feel really excited to get back to it. I can't wait until my next run! Oh and my first 5k is Sept. 26th! Hooray for running!!

Running, Running, Running

Today I feel like I had a break through! I have a lot of goals like run a 10k, run a half marathon, run more races and greater distance, you get the idea! So I have had a mental block. Every time I plan to run more than three miles I end up sleeping in or finding some reason why I can't run that day. Today I decided that I was doing at least four miles even if I have to walk lots. Well I ended up doing 4.38 miles! I did walk some but I walked less than 2 minutes during the whole 4.38 miles. I felt awesome after, I am only going to improve from there! I want to be able to call four miles a short run. I feel like things are starting to go really great! I plan to always do four miles from now on :D I am thrilled with my break through today!

Sunburns and PR's

Last Sunday me and my hubs went on a hike. It was 102 degrees out and even though I put on some sunscreen after a mile or two, it was too little, too late. I looked like a lobster!! Trying to run while your skin is on fire and hurts is hard! I went on a run earlier this week and only lasted a mile before deciding to walk. Finally my sunburn is feeling almost completely better so I decided to do a two mile run this morning. Lately it seems like my times aren't very good. Which is very discouraging but I am still getting out there so the fact that I run slow isn't the end of the world. However today was different! Normally I can run a mile with a time I am happy with (not great but happy with) but today I did two miles with a time I would have been proud of for just a mile! Not sure why the sudden change of time, I didn't feel like I ran any harder, but I am happy with it.

My sister is coming to visit me in 20 days, YAY!! I am going to make her run with me. I will start her on Day 1 of the Couch-to-5k program which might seem boring to me but I can't wait to be able to run with someone!! Since starting to run in February I haven't ran with anyone so can't wait!

New Adventures...far in the future!

My husband recently went out of town for a few days. When I am given extra alone time then I start planning! I have decided that I will be running in the 2014 Tinkerbell Half Marathon. Why the 2014 and not the 2013, well the 2013 is completely sold out! Plus this gives me PLENTY of time to train and plenty of time to talk my friends into doing it too. With 78 weeks (but who's counting) until the race it gives me enough time to log enough miles to actually run to Disneyland. So as I train I will be keeping track of the miles and will use the goal of "running to Disneyland" as an extra goal and motivation.

I think the heat is making me slow down. I seem to be getting slower rather than faster. Today I tried to do interval training (that kicked my butt) to hopefully improve my running time. Maybe I should just focus on logging the miles and work on speed once I can go the distances I want to run.

Only two more weeks until I have earned new shoes!!! I love setting up goals and actually achieving them.

Goal: New running shoes

My wonderful husband (and probably the only person that reads this blog) has challenged me with finding a running program for myself. If I complete it then I get new running shoes! I am sooo excited about this! I love a good challenge and I really really really want new running shoes. My little brother use to think that the shoes were the thing that determined how fast you ran. While trying on shoes in a store, he would running around the store. He would then report on if they made him run fast or not. It was the cutest thing ever especially since he was about 5 years old at the time. Anyway so the running program that I am looking at is a 18 week half marathon training program. My husband and I have agreed that if I do 6 weeks then I get shoes!! Yippee! I plan to complete all 18 weeks though. Today I ran two miles that kicked my butt. I am still getting over a cold so my nose ran the whole time and my lungs burned. I wanted to stop as soon as I started but I pushed myself for two miles. The road by my house is closed so running was a pleasure without cars passing at 50 mph constantly.

Happy National Running Day

This morning I went out for an easy run. I figured I would do two miles, maybe three at the most. Then I met two crazy dogs that I was sure probably would either bite me next time I ran by them or they would run in the street after me again but the next time there might be a car. So out of concern for their safety and my limbs I decided to extend my run so I didn't have to run by them again. After dealing with heavy traffic, blind spots and poor quality of shoulder on the roads, I decided that I hate that route and will never run it again!! I completed 5.91 miles though and I was pretty excited about that! I find it unbelievable that I can go that far. Instead of using that knowledge as motivation, it some how harms me. I have convinced myself that it was a fluke last time I ran a distance around that. So hopefully with this run I will use it for motivation that I can do it. Plus my goal was to keep running fun so I need to do that.

On my way to a 10K

I can run 3 miles!! Sure I only attempted and completed it once but it is still awesome for me. I found a 6 week 10k training program that I just started. It is shocking to me that running and stopping is harder than running continuously. I have one more run to do until I am finished with my first week. I am really hoping that this program is successful and that I am able to run a 10k or even an hour at the end of these 6 weeks. I love finding running programs that challenge me and help me to increase my endurance.

Finished!

Today I did my last run with the Couch-to-5k program!! It was amazing! The first week of this program you run for 60 seconds. While I was able to do that I remember being out of breath. Now at week nine I am able to run for 30 minutes with energy to spare. I can't believe how far I have come on this program and I know I will just continue to improve. Also I think I inspired my sister to start running. YAY! I love when others around me like to run. I enjoy being able to talk about my progress with someone who has been there or going through the same thing as me and it gives me motivation. I plan to increase my running time by 5 minutes each week. Eventually I will be an unstoppable running machine!

Progress

Today I ran 2 1/2 miles! Big deal for me. I get excited about all my runs so if you look at this blog be warned that I get excited! I also made some plans today. I plan to do a 5K this summer and then in October I plan to do a 10K. I have never attempted a 10K so I am thrilled by this challenge. I have 2 runs left in my 5K program. I am a complete beginner so I love apps for my phone to keep me on track with my running. I need to figure out which training app to use to get me running a 10K.

Bucket List

This is my running bucket list. I wish to complete these in no special order but I hope to complete them :D
-run a 5K
-run more 5K's :D
-run a local half marathon
-run the disney princess half marathon
-convince my husband to run some races with me
-keep it fun
So far I have loved getting healthier and adding running to my life. I like trying to beat my previous times/distances but I am not going to beat myself up if I don't. I plan on listening to silly songs while I run and enjoy every minute of it.

Getting Started

Hi! I am starting this whole running thing. Well when I say started about 2 months ago. I have come far in my journey. I can run over 2 miles...without stopping. Some of you might be laughing but I think that is awesome especially for me! I am hoping to run a 5K this summer. The goal is to be able to run it all. It won't be fast right now but I am hoping to improve my speed and also improve my distance. Basically this blog will kind of hold myself accountable and hopefully help keep me improving.
